OWA – An unexpected error occurred and your request couldn’t be handled when viewing emails with attachments only.

Problem:
Have a Windows 2008 server R2 with exchange 2010. Everything was working fine, however, I installed SharePoint 2010 and then uninstalled it once I realized it stopped OWA from working at all. Since then, everything was back to normal….except one thing. When I log into OWA, everything logs in okay, I can only view emails without attachments. When I click on an email that has an attachment, it gives me an error within the message pane on OWA saying “An unexpected error occurred and your request couldn’t be handled.”

When I look in the event logs I have a particular log that may be relevant (see below event log message). I am not sure how to resolve this….anyone have any suggestions?

Start event log message:
Watson report about to be sent for process id: 6600, with parameters: E12IIS, c-RTL-AMD64, 14.00.0694.000, OWA, M.Exchange.Net, M.E.S.R.P.ProtectorsManager.LoadProtectors, M.E.S.R.Protectors.AttachmentProtectionException, 8b03, 14.00.0694.000.
ErrorReportingEnabled: False

Resolution:
Install Exchange 2010 Roll up 3, and it will fix this problem.

    Hi Zahir,

    I’ve seen your comments on the microsoft technet forums re this issue. I have the same problem with attachments, any emails with attachments in OWA 2010 cause problems and go into an endless/prolonged loop if I try to open it.

    In OWA I get an unexpected error occurred on any emails with attachments. The funny thing is attachments were fine and have recently become an issue. If I look at old emails with attachments before the problem occurred, I dont get the unexpected error occurred but I have the same, looping problem opening attachments.

    I have Service Pack 1 and installed rollup 2 as recommended by yourself and others. This hasnt helped in my case, I’ve recreated all virtual directories in hope it may help but it hasnt.

    Not sure what I can do apart from reinstalling CAS. Any advice will be much appreciated.
